Best of 2013

Because my goals are pretty much set (well, I could actually blog about them much later when I've decided on what I want to do), I'd rather talk about the things I discovered in 2013 that will probably affect my activities for 2014. Some of these I actually didn't want to blog about because I was feeling selfish, haha!

Anyway, without further ado, my top 10. Not in any particular order, of course:

Juju Eats

Dear Juju Eats, please move somewhere near Makati CBD. Every time I struggle to think about what I'd eat at night -- especially now that I've decided to forgo rice in the evenings -- I think about you. Please please please please move near me.

League of Legends Rampage Part 2: The Event Proper 2013

This is a continuation of my students' League of Legends Rampage experience. The first part can be found here. To give you guys a brief background, I was invited to this event but since my students happily volunteered to go in my stead, I let them have fun (since I swore off MMO games a long time ago).

By Guest Bloggers:
Thaddeus Brillantes , Danica Esguerra, Jaryd Ramos & Gillian Tan

Garena holds its annual League of Legends Event at SMX Convention Center. Merchandises, such as ballers, key chains, shirts, were available for the people's consumption. Attendees were also kept entertained as events were scheduled and handled out perfectly. As the convention was happening, the elite teams compete to be the best, to represent our country in the upcoming South-East Asian Tournament, and soon, the World Championships. People who were also eager to dress up as their favorite champion were spotted along with the crowd. People who attended the event got good freebies as well.

League of Legends Rampage Part 1: Razer Philippines

Skysenshi's NOTE: I got an invitation from Razer Philippines to cover the League of Legends Rampage 2013 event. My students gladly volunteered to represent me so the next two blog entries will be coming from my students, writing as my guest bloggers. Anyway, here's the first part of their Rampage adventure.

Razer. For Gamers. By Gamers.

By Guest Bloggers:
Thaddeus Brillantes , Danica Esguerra, Jaryd Ramos & Gillian Tan

Razer is a privately held computer peripherals manufacturer specializing in products specifically marketed to gamers.

I bet you didn’t know the definition did you?

Anyway, a much awaited event for all League of Legends players in the Philippines. Held at Halls 1 and 2 of the SMX Convention in SM Mall of Asia on August 10, 2013, thousands of League players flooded the venue in hopes of attaining the prizes in-store by GarenaPH.

This annual event was called Rampage!

We got inside the venue and we first notice a line was forming in a booth. What booth is that? Yep, Razer.

Dove Beauty Event

Gosh, I feel like I've been out of the loop forever. It's been a while since I saw my good friend Rowena and the Bridges people, especially Franco. I missed Michelle's birthday last month! T.T I missed you guys!!!

So when Rowena texted me about Dove and that the event is being arranged by Bridges, I immediately said yes. I was sad not to have seen Michelle, but at least Rowena and a lot of the familiar beauty bloggers are there, especially Jennie, Shen, Nikki, Mother Noemi and Sophie. Note to self: Arrange a schedule with Michelle X2 (Lim and MrsM) and Rowena. Now na.

Anyhoo...

The event was held at the Ascott Japan room and it started with Gem's brief lecture about moisture. Apparently, not a lot of people are aware that despite the humidity in our country, we need moisture.

A more scientific discussion ensued when Dr. Tiongson stepped in. She explained the differences in skin types and moisture levels. We later took a skin quiz and it said that I am 19 years old. CHOS! (I could actually add one more factor to this quiz: SLEEP. Which I have been deprived of for two months now. So I actually feel like I'm about 10 years older now, since I never feel refreshed when waking up anymore.)

Incidentally, one other reason why I said yes to this event is that Dove is one of the very few drugstore brands I actually believe in. I am a very lazy person and I loathe applying lotion on my skin (sometimes I even skip the sunblock). With Dove, I can actually feel that I'm getting moisture, even if it's not as thorough as actually applying body lotion.

COMMERCIAL BREAK: FOOD!

Couldn't resist taking photos of these yummies. I picked this photo instead of a more focused one because I neglected to take a snapshot of the pizzas we enjoyed for appetizers. You can see one of them at the back of the pasta. There were more than three types served! In fact, before this pasta came in, I was already almost full.

And these babies were part of the dessert. Of course, I enjoyed the fruit platter and I normally don't enjoy eating chocolates (I like drinking them), but these had caramel in the middle. Caramel with chocolate is something I cannot resist. So yeah, this pastry is as good as it looks.

Ok, back to the program...Hehe.

During dinner, the good doctor sat with us so that we can have our individual consultations. Here's Jennie, asking about her skin. I'm guessing she was talking about the corners of her eyes. Haha.

Me taking the skin test. (Gosh, I really look like I've aged 10 years. I also look like I've lost a lot of pounds. *Sigh* How I wish the last part were actually true.) My moisture level was originally at 31% and then after soaping with Dove, it went up to around 40-41%.

After the tests, we were treated to a "No make-up make-up look" lecture, given by none other than Ms. Xeng Zulueta. (She actually looks a lot younger now than when I last saw her around three to four years ago, when I attended her lecture at the Shu Uemura counter in Rustan's Makati.)

She has a lot of useful advice for people like me, who prefer products that can do a lot of things (3-in-1 etc.) instead of putting on too many on your skin. It's actually because I'm really lazy and I actually hate the hassle of putting on make-up...but how else would you hide a haggard face, ne?

Wow, a lot of beauty bloggers flocking towards Ms. Zulueta. She's a veritable idol. Really. She's nice, sweet, intelligent and really witty. Who wouldn't want to be around her?

The Dove products I took home. Sorry, am not giving these away. They're all mine. Hahahaha!

On winning in the 12th Philippine Web Awards

By now, some of my students and other colleagues have already congratulated me via Facebook even though I actually wanted to blog about my Otaku Fridge winning in the 12th Philippine Web Awards (PWA) first. I do appreciate all the congratulatory notes, of course. As in, super!

All the finalists were asked (beforehand) to prepare a 12-word acceptance speech, in commemoration of the number of times the PWA have awarded various website owners for their creativity and ingenuity. I was not expecting to win. Truth be told, the fact that my students (Project Skyrocket) also made it into the finals felt like I had already won twice.

So when I did my acceptance speech, I could only muster the 12+1 words: "Thanks to my professors for their guidance and my students for their support."

But let me just expound on that.

It has been 9 years since I entered The Otaku Fridge into a competition of this magnitude. (It placed into the PWA semi-finals in 2002. While one of my other websites, Disc13, placed into the finals in 2000.) It is only now, however, that I had gotten local support -- mostly from my colleagues (fellow educators), my mentors and my students. They all inspired me to always keep honing my craft and aspire towards excellence.

I actually saw the former APC Director of Information Management, Leo Querubin, during the event. The last time I saw him was probably more than a decade ago. He said he was so proud that I got into the finals and he repeated this again when I won. Thank you so much, Sir. You are actually my role model when it comes to business integrity and ethics. (Haha, I remember your anecdotes. Mygosh, I still laugh about them from time to time.)

At this point, I would also like to thank my other mentors, Director Rhea Valbuena, former Director Gerard Cadlum and APC President Paulino Y. Tan for believing in me and encouraging me to spread my wings.

My heartfelt gratitude also go to the students (you know who you are) that kept egging me to never forget my dreams while I helped them pursue theirs, as well as the colleagues/classmates that always stood by me no matter what. Yoohoo: Elvert, Luna, Cris and my high school (Cha, Tin, Rebie) and UP-CMC (Chitchat, Jenny, Rod, Nath) classmates!

Again, you are all much appreciated. This victory is OURS. I could never thank you enough.

12th PWA Image Gallery
As for the Philippine Web Awards, here are the photos, as well as my observations. It is a lot different from the Philippine Blog Awards, which actually felt like a fabulous red carpet event. PWA, by contrast, is very business-like and methodical. The criteria for judging alone already felt like you were being evaluated for Quality Assurance: Content, Design, Functionality, Technologies Used, Originality. (I'm guessing rubrics have been used. Haha!)

Despite the serious tone of the event, the hosts were quite fun and entertaining.

At first, I wasn't sure if I landed in the correct location. The theme was Techno-Fiesta, so many of the organizers were in barong and terno.

The hallway was lined with sponsors, many of them giving away lots of gadgets via raffle draws.

These were the hosts that handed out certificates to the finalists. I also received a certificate for making it into the semi-finals. What did I say about being business-conscious? You can actually add those certificates to your portfolio. This wasn't the case in the late 90s to the early 2000s.

Uh. I thought I was going to be able to grab a quick dinner from one of the fast food chains at the RCBC Tower, but I didn't anticipate the traffic. By the time I got to the Carlos P. Romulo Hall, they were about to award the finalists' certificate. These San Marino Tuna Paella spoonfuls had been repeatedly offered to me by the sponsoring booths. (They're actually pretty tasty pala!)

Me and my sister's colleague/roommate Eky.

With my former student Hsiang of Project Skyrocket. She made it into the finals. She looks so cute in this photo.

The PWA stage. It doesn't look festive enough, but I was to find out later why.

Behold Michelle O-Bomb-A! The reason why we needed a minimalist stage. She (he?) was so amazing, she upstaged everything...including the  backdrops.

Michelle changed into this figure-hugging red gown. Bongga!

Then later, she changed into this elegant black formal wear.

Yep! He is one of my favorite performers, Noel Cabangon. I had recorded a short clip of him performing the classic Kanlungan, but perhaps I'll just update this blog entry once I'm done editing it.

I just took a snapshot of my students' website, Project Skyrocket, being announced as one of the finalists. Though the site didn't win, I was so happy to hear her say she will try again. That's the spirit, Hsiang!

Photo op of winners, by Daryl Silao. Click for a larger view.

Another picture of the winners, also taken by Daryl Silao. Click for a larger view.

Wasn't able to pose with my trophy at the venue so we just took this picture at home. Forgive the eye bags. We got home at around midnight.

More photos of the event, including the hosts and speakers can be found at the 12th Philippine Web Awards album of Skysenshi's Hermitage.

Excuse me while I LSS over Noel Cabangon's Kanlungan. Such a beautiful song, really. I keep playing it over and over on my digicam Shin-Chan2.

A semi-finalist at the 12th Philippine Web Awards

The Otaku Fridge has done it again. This time around, I made it to the semi-final round of The 12th Philippine Web Awards. The last time one of my websites made it to the PWA was when Disc13.com still existed, in 2000 as a finalist and 2002 as a semi-finalist. Then again, 2002 was also the last time I competed for anything online (before the Philippine Blog Awards last year, that is).

I am now asking for your support at the PWA's People's Choice. Please vote for The Otaku Fridge at http://peopleschoice.philippinewebawards.com. You can vote once every 24 hours.

EDIT: Oh, I just got another exciting news yesterday. Apparently, a project of a former student of mine also got into the semi-finals. So now my request will be to vote for "The Otaku Fridge" and "Project Skyrocket".

You know you did something right as an educator when your student also qualified to compete for the same award.

For the readers who continuously support my sites, thank you very much! Although I don't really expect to win People's Choice -- knowing the number of websites that will be doing promotions -- at least I've made it this far.

Thank you! =^.^=

Um. That drop shadow is bothering me...Hee.

Birthday 2011: My Girly Wedding Cake

Little girls dream of their future wedding gowns and walking down the aisle. I never dreamed of my wedding. All I ever fantasized about -- when it comes to questions on weddings and engagement -- was how my cake was going to look like. Eight years ago, my butch-y friend Ivann (whose real name is Evangeline) called me up and told me that she'd buy me all the wedding cakes I wanted as long as I never got married. Hahahahaha!

Looks like most of my friends had been playing with this idea, if my 2011 birthday cake were any indication:

No, I did not get married on March 5. But I did recall saying that I wanted a Merced wedding cake for my birthday. Wish was granted. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! MMMMWAAAAAH!

Well, we also had chicken wings, meticulously prepared by our helper Ate Jasmine.

Baked macaroni, a Dr. Corina Venturanza creation. Haha! Thanks, Tita Yna!

Adobong tahong by Cris Dumlao. Best eaten with lots of steamed rice.

Special lemon iced tea, also by Cris Dumlao. Daniel Enriquez, my last visitor, had two pitchers of this. Well. He remained awake till 6AM the next day.

Cutting the cake. My guests don't know what to make of this. They treated me like a debutante. Hahaha! (I didn't have this kind of cake on my 18th.) Elvert thinks that Rebie looked really hungry here, but Rebie said she was staring at the candy flowers. (Photo by Elvert.)

Yep! She really was after the flowers!

Now for the hard part:

Notice the amount of concentration on the faces of Cris, Elvert and my brother Pau? They were trying to figure out how to open the cake's beribboned wishes/fortune.

Cha's look of bewilderment: PRICELESS.

Tin had the hardest time with these ribbons. Must have something to do with her IQ. We noticed that the higher your IQ, the more difficulty you'd have with this.

But she rewarded herself with pink candy flowers. See the evidence in her choppers.

Lei and Rose arrived a little bit later.

Followed by Dan, who spent the rest of the night talking about projects, politics, ethics and whatnot.

More photos by Elvert:

From left: Cha, me, Pau, Rebie, Cris and Tin.

From left: Tin, Elvert, Cha, me, Pau, Rebie.

Me and my pretty wedding kekki!

HSBC Annette and Johanna's Favorite Things

HSBC has a lot of new exciting things in store for us this 2011. I remember enjoying their Coffee Talks 3 session, wherein celebrities discussed politics and showbiz. This time around, I and my fellow bloggers Rowena and Michelle, were invited to HSBC Red Mastercard Hot Deals launch at the Makati Shangri-la.

Apprently, the theme of the day was red. But first, let's get lunch out of the way. (I normally don't document what event buffets have to offer but Makati Shang's Filipino cuisine just tickled me.)

Yeah, this was my messy plate, which contained lumpiang ubod, fish and mostly vegetables. Johanna actually complained that my plate was too healthy, haha! (I skipped the lechon.)

This tinola was just divine. Rowena said that she tasted lemon grass in it, so that probably explains the soothing effect it had on my very sore throat.

I'm a Brazo de Mercedes addict, by the way. But the ones they served were delectable minis.

Om nom nom. Eez my dessert plate!

Anyway, I've segued long enough. Let's get to the exciting part. The Red Mastercard obviously targets the woman on the go. Hm. I notice we're always represented by the color red.

To start off, a few items were raffled off and given away. The items were from the establishments that HSBC partnered with.

As the press kit indicates:
[W]here for every P2,000 everyday spend, you get a P100 Gift Certificate or P100 off from select retailers. Whether it's shopping, groceries, movies, salon or spa HSBC Red Mastercard has got every woman’s need covered.

“At HSBC, we’re always on the lookout for new and exciting deals for our customers. With this permanent feature, your everyday spend allows you to be able to treat yourself to a round of shopping, buy groceries, catch the latest movies, get a new hairdo, or enjoy a massage at the spa!” said Annette Tirol, HSBC’s Deputy Head of Personal Financial Services.

Needless to say, we were showered with a looooot of goodies from the partner merchants. Michelle won one of 'em bags! (That's Rowena right behind her.)

Ok, now for the most entertaining part. Johanna went retail hopping in the name of market research. I had fun taking photos of her projections so even though I found out later on that the hi-res versions were actually inside the press kit CD, I'm opting to use the ones I took. Let's just call it re-appropriation of art, if you will. Besides, I kind of like the vintage effect these projected images seem to exude. Anywaaaaay...

Shown here is Johanna playing with Forever21's cute accessories. I received one of those gorgeous off-white rose rings.

She also surprised us by saying she loved Ace Hardware. Seeing her kikay tendencies, this came off as almost shocking. (But then I also carpenter my stuff, as well as buy paints, thinner etc. from Ace Hardware, too. The only thing I can't get there is an 8ft x 4ft plywood. And raw palochina.)

Then there's my favorite Korean beauty haven: The Face Shop. I'm afraid to remember what it was Johanna was holding here (looks like a syringe) so let's just assume that she's doing it for beauty. Everyone who's used to this blog probably knows that my ultimate favorite lip balm can be found in The Face Shop.

Who wouldn't enjoy almost free movie passes?

Judging from this picture, it seems like I'm not the only one who goes gaga over The Body Shop's bath products. (I was supposed to review my TBS vanilla bath set this week but just got too busy reminiscing about Boracay.)

Thanks, Johanna and Annette! I definitely had fun watching you have fun!

For more information about these Red Hot Deals and the HSBC Red Mastercard, you may visit the website at http://www.hsbc.com.ph.

For a more personalized service, you may contact one of HSBC's representatives, Ivy P. Raya, at 7592781 or 0922-8564373.
