2015 Year in Review

Whew. It has been a long long while since I actually blogged. August 2015, to be exact, and it was a recipe. In any case, I had loved my 2014 so much that my goals for 2015 have actually been whittled down to SIX.

Because I am running a video game development studio, I have no choice but to be social, haha. So that's no longer one of my yearly goals. What remained are the following...

2014 Year in Review

Since whittling down my goals to 8, I feel like 2014 has become one of my best years ever. I mean, sure, it had snags (megalomaniac ex-lessor included), but the rewards tripled after that experience.

I've decided to make my 8 goals permanent every year. They're flexible enough to keep me motivated in reaching them on or before the end of the year. So these are the status of my 2014 goals:

8. Travel at least twice a year.
Preferably 1 local and 1 international destination.

One of my teams (Project K) and I went to Sagada to do some research for one of our educational projects. It was my first time to go to Sagada and it was loads of fun! Baguio was awesome, too, since we were able to visit Bencab Museum. More of that story here.

For the second out-of-town trip, boyfie and I attended a wedding in Sta. Rosa. Sure it's not really much of a trip distance-wise (since my parents live in Tagaytay), but it's the first time I actually spent a lot of time in Sta. Rosa. The reception of Sajean and Jov were held at the Chateaux de Paris Grand Clubhouse.

Staycation: The Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences

This wasn't my first visit to The Picasso. I attended an art exhibit at this hotel last year, and also had dinner at their Brasserie Boheme on the same day. It was, however, my first time to stay in.

Pictured above is a photo of their facade.

Goals for 2014

I had actually been trying to put this off because I'm in denial about the things I have to do. Haha. But ok, last year I made 10 goals and I achieved half of them. I'm simplifying them this time around instead of making them ultra specific.

Permanent Yearly Goals
8. Travel at least twice a year. Preferably 1 local and 1 international destination.

7. Participate in a nation-wide competition.

6. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. (new perma-goal!!!) Even though I never made this goal in 2013, I still strived to be hospital-free. I succeeded at it till about the 3rd quarter of 2013. But then the *ber months arrived. Anyway, I noticed that I was healthier when I was cooking my own meals so I will get back to that soon.

Yeah, I miss making sandwiches like this.

My Year 2013 in Review

I'm currently reviewing the goals I had made for 2013 and seeing if I had met each of them or if there had been better alternatives. I will still make goals for 2014 but perhaps not as specific as I used to make them. Let's see...

10. YEARLY GOAL: Travel at least twice a year. Half done.
I spent most of the year being a hermit so I had to think back really hard... OK, spending a team building weekend with my College of Saint Benilde (CSB) co-faculty in Puerto Galera during the summer should fall under this. It was my first time to go to Puerto Galera anyway. Though my mom hailed from Mindoro, I had never been to this particular area. And other than that fun weekend trip to Tagaytay with my former Anino Games officemates in September, I don't think I completely fulfilled this goal.

Ancestral Homes at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

How do I even begin to describe this trip to the Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, "A Genesis Heritage Resort"? Perhaps the best way to explain to go about it is to say that this museum/resort is owned by a family that actually rescued so many ancestral homes and replanted/rebuilt them brick by brick in Bataan.

Perhaps I should tell this story through photos instead. Warning: there are LOTS!

Hiding away at White Knight Hotel Intramuros

Late last year, one of the things I did in the name of my doctoral thesis was hole myself up in various hotels once a month so that I could write in peace. I would do this during the weekends. I asked for Fridays off from work, so I could write for three days straight every week. I preferred hotels that were difficult to find and where cellphone signals were sometimes weak. Maximum solitude!!

White Knight Hotel in Intramuros was perhaps the best one that suited my needs. For me, it was not that easy to find. I went round and round before I realized that it was actually inside the compound where Barbara's was located.

Sorry for the dark photo. My first gen Samsung Galaxy tab has a really sucky camera. This is the facade of the entrance. Barbara's is right in front of San Agustin Church.

I booked via Agoda.com and got the cheapest room (at around P1,500/night). There was another hotel listed inside Intramuros, Bayleaf, but that one's located at one of the entrances so getting it was out of the question. I needed seclusion. Anyway, for the cheapest room, I got this:

Under no standard should this room be considered small. At least, not in the Philippines. What you're seeing right now, that's not even half of the room. That's probably a third of the room. In fact, there's so much space, you could put 3 more beds of that size in there and still be able to move freely!

(I actually had a difficult time sleeping because part of me was scared that I'd wake up with some mumu lying beside me.)

Understand that this hotel is old. That's the beauty of it. See, this is the floor. The tiles are typical of houses that were built during my grandparents' grandparents' time.

Here's the banister and the stairway. If you're easily scared, yup, it could be really creepy at night.

Here's the hallway. I had to take a quick shot because there was a wedding entourage walking around the corridor.

One of the corridor dead ends. I could totally make a video game theme out of this hotel's interiors.

Here's the bathroom. It's also large. Though I have issues about the drainage and I found myself stepping on the sides of the bath tub while bathing.

The view on the right side of the windows.

The view on the left side of the windows. I think that's either the museum or Barbara's. I remember going into the museum some time ago, but was not allowed to take photos. Sadly.

Sorry!! I couldn't resist. Below the windows, you could see these.  I don't know what they're called but they remind me of my grandmother's huge house in Mindoro.

Update: I got a message from one of my former professors (Dr. Aleli Agoncillo-Quirante) and these things are called "ventanilla". Yay, learned something new!

Me saying goodbye to White Knight Hotel. A friend picked me up and I asked to have a photo of me taken as I bade adiós to this beautiful place. (Thank you, White Knight Hotel! You were instrumental to my graduation last October/November.)

I really want to return, for relaxation purposes next time (this place is really value for your money) and I'm going to ask my girl buddies to accompany me so I can sleep properly. Hehe.

My friend and I explored Intramuros after I checked out but I'm still wondering whether to post the short exploration on sarimanok.ph or on this blog. Anyway, expect another Intramuros-related post from me and thanks for reading! =^.^=

10 Goals for 2013

I don't make resolutions. I make goals (the career-oriented ones I always put in my performance appraisal form). And so far, I think I've met all of them. 2012 was such a fulfilling year for me and I'm hoping my goals for 2013 will be met.

I did not list down my goals last year because I only had two solid ones (#9 & #10) and these are goals I've personally set for myself since 2010.

10. YEARLY GOAL: Travel at least twice a year. It's usually one international and one local destination. Didn't get to go out of the country in 2012 but at least I went to two local destinations.

9. YEARLY GOAL: Participate (and most especially WIN) in a nation-wide competition. This has been a tradition for me every year, but it was in 2012 that I first entered into a team-oriented competition (Philippine Game Development Festival) for the first time. Which my teamsssss won. =^.^= Since I won't be having a team this year, looks like I'm back to personal web development competitions.

8. Hold another art exhibit before March. Though this one is 50-50, considering the budget I need to pull and the amount of concentration I need to muster.

7. Attend international conferences AND/OR have my doctoral dissertation edited for publishing and conference presentations. This one is kinda 50-50 as well because it means that I'd be spreading myself thinly again.

6. Relax from January to February so that I can get back to the game development industry by March.

5. Wrap-up all my legal stuff (expired license, NSO etc.)

4. Pay off all my credit card related debts by June.

3. Invest in a condo of my own starting June. Yeah, I have my eyes set on certain places already. I just have to figure out how to go about it.

2. Be an active blogger again with a regular schedule. And a positive vibe. For starters, I had to convert my profile into a page and will be merging that with my old page soon.

1. Be ready for a love life by June. Nyahahahahahaha! OMGWUT. HAHAHAHAHAHA! Tatawa nalang ako ng malakas. Hahahaha!

Sorry for the last image. I have no idea how this is going to turn out so yeah...it's much like that "Guess The Guardian" contest I've been holding once in a while. Could it be Charmander, Omnom or Freedom Gundam? Only time will tell if this road is for me. =^.^=

Hong Kong Nights 2011

From the moment we arrived in Hong Kong, it was very clear how commercial the entire place was. It was around midnight then but the streets of Kowloon was still buzzing with activity and was very well-lighted.

I was actually shocked that we were in Kowloon, haha. Because the last time I was there (approximately 14 years ago), it looked a lot like a more packed Binondo. Kowloon now is full of well-lighted modern buildings -- you can hardly tell where one started and one ended -- with Chanel and Sasa branches in every corner. Marking Chanel as a landmark there is like marking Mini Stop as a landmark here.

I saw HK mostly at night. I mentioned in my previous post that during the day, Cris and I would be stuck in the largest convention center I have ever seen. That being the case, we did our best to entertain ourselves, while fighting the temptation to buy just about everything in sight.

Ah...and our worst experience while traveling, I guess, was when these bunch of gargantuan, Amazon-like party girls pulled then pushed us away from the cab we were grabbing. We were there first, huh! They were big bullies in the literal sense and were talking in super fast and super loud tones but I suppose that was part of the adventure. I was actually tempted to take a photo of them and then blog about the experience but they were 5...and like I said, huge. I've seen YouTube videos of people being mauled in Hong Kong that I dare not risk ending up in the hospital. (My mom, who used to work for San Miguel Corporation in HK, says they're probably not really from HK and promptly blamed another country. LOL.)

In any case, we still had fun. After recovering from the shock, that is, as I have never encountered such monumental rudeness in all my travels. Anyhoo, here are some snippets of our fun nights in HK. You can also view the rest of the photos on the Skysenshi's Hermitage Facebook Page.

Second night: Studying the map at a Japanese restaurant in Kowloon. The funny thing is, despite having a map, we'd still get lost.

Satisfied. I think I can't stop eating Japanese food everywhere.

Cris pointing to an old school bottle-cap. I miss these, actually, as I think the new ones are kinda weird (they dip into your drink, ew).

I was in the mood for something warm and sea weed heavy. This udon dish hit the spot.

Cris loves tonkatsu!

The next day, we decided to book a cruise ship dinner at the hotel lobby just before leaving for the Siggraph convention.

Another cruise ship over thar. The lights in HK are beautiful at night.

More lights. ^_^

This is what the cruise ship looks like from the inside. I didn't take photos of the buffet tables because they looked messy (after all the tourists had gotten to them), but there were lots and lots and lots.

Our entertainment. Cris actually guessed that they were Filipinos, and when I smiled at that girl over there, we seem to have understood each other.

That's the funny thing. I kept getting asked about directions from Mainland Chinese and their questions were in Chinese...which had me checking the mirror to make sure that my eyes still looked big. Got the same reaction from Singaporeans.  But Pinoys can tell, even the ones that I thought were Singaporeans because they spoke fluent Singlish.

What I ate. Well, about half of it since I came back for seconds, thirds, fourth...Needless to say, those pounds I lost in the last 7 months due to stress? I ate my way back to them.

Beautiful Symphony of Lights. HK is renowned for them. What happens is that at a certain time during the night, many of the popular buildings would do an exhibition of lights. More photos of that in the Facebook Page.

Viewing the city through the windows. It's actually cold up on the deck so I quickly climbed back down after the Symphony of Lights.

The showgirls performing Nobody, which was the only song I recognized since they seem to be singing ancient Chinese songs all the time...and a few ancient Japanese songs as well.

Ah, this is what the convention center looks like. Those green lights change to pink.

The legendary Hong Kong Clock Tower. We took the scenic route after the cruise and passed by the Avenue of Stars, which is like the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Posing by the harbor.

Finally got to the Avenue of Stars. Sorry, I couldn't get a proper shot of the lady's head. This place is better seen during the day, as there are lots of interesting statues to see.

The marker of an actress with an enchanting name. I took photos of Jackie Chan's, Bruce Lee's (of course!), Maggie Cheung, Michelle Yeoh and other HK actors that I know of. Jackie Chan's marker had his hand prints. You can see more photos here.

Just had to take a photo of this Chinese junk. The reds were beautiful.

Bruce Lee!

Busy busy busy nights steeped in commerce.

And thiiiiiiiis...is a giant Ferrero Christmas Tree.

Up close. Enough to make a chocolate-lover's mouth water.

Ah, this is street food. I believe they're called bubble waffles. They're so much fun to eat, especially when you're walking down so many avenues. ^_^;

Up next, HK by day. But that was just a few hours before our flight so we didn't get to explore much.
