Gains and Losses in 2016

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I'm pretty sure, I wasn't the only one who had a wild 2016. Much as I'd hate to use an unoriginal description, it really had been a roller coaster ride. It's why this year, I won't be doing my annual goals thing. I hadn't been mindful of my goals lately (except maybe for the "finish at least 2 projects a year" thing), and just let 2016 lead me to wherever. I'm actually thankful to Instagram's #2016bestnine for showing me that there had been a lot of ups, despite all the loved ones I have lost.

Gamified apps for weight loss, no crash dieting.

I have blogged several times about shedding December fat and so far, this is probably my healthiest tweak on my routine.  Just to summarize, I have had a knee injury since 2012 and would develop a foot injury called plantar fasciitis every time I go 5 pounds beyond my normal weight. In the previous years, I have done intermittent fasting and sticking to carbs with low glycemic index.

I had lived a relatively unhealthy 2015 so my December 2014 weight actually stuck around and then gained some. By Christmas 2015, I was 4 pounds overweight (at 125.6 lbs) and my feet were literally killing me. So I started losing weight again by January 1.

It's 2016 and still saying no to hair straightening...

Oh, no! Yet another hair post! Haha! Ok, lemme just warn you that this is probably the only blog post of mine that has too many photos of my face. Ick. (I really dislike seeing myself in photos.)

Anyway, I guess it will always be hair issues for someone like me who has lived with a head of unruly curls her entire life. But I've lived with it and considered it part of who I am.

My first taste of acupuncture at Makati Med

I had a really good internal medicine doctor. The last time I visited him was 2 years ago. He was very effective but the list of medicines I had to take probably made Mercury Drug rich. I was also feeling very worried about my liver.

Copyright: corareed / 123RF Stock Photo
I hadn't experienced digestive problems (ulcer, among many things) after I resigned from my post as a video game producer and graduated from PhD, two of the things that had been causing me so much stress. After my healing, I started eating right and I have been known to regularly walk all over Makati.

My activities in the last month had been causing me stress again, and most of it is related to me building an office. I couldn't figure out why I had already been eating healthy and yet I've been having acid problems. This time around, I decided to try the "natural" way. Acupuncture, basically mine involved having super thin needles work on my body's acupoints.

Suggested Gifts for the Graduates

March and April are the months when most seniors in the Philippines graduate. Being a part-time faculty for two colleges that both have trimestral schedules, we either have them earlier or much later. In any case, I was asked to check out Lazada's shop to see if I could find ideal gift suggestions.

To be honest, the gifts I picked were ones I actually would like myself. Hehehe, but I'm pretty sure my own students would more or less have the same tastes (since we're all from the video game development industry anyway). So let's start off with the gadget I coveted most:

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom C101 Android

I have been eyeing this since it first came out but I had just bought my Note at that time. I tested out its features and can I just say...Wow. I fell in love with it at first handling. XD

Healing Injury Part 1: Losing 13 Pounds in Weeks

I did mention several posts ago that I am currently suffering from plantar fasciitis and creaking knees. And man, the former has been taking months to heal. It was annoying in the first few months (I'd wake up limping in the morning due to pain), but by December (coincidentally the month I pigged out) the pain had become extremely unbearable. By that time, both my feet would be in excruciating pain upon waking up.

I knew what I needed to do then:

  1. Lose weight.
  2. Change shoes.
For this post, I will be talking about how I lost 13 pounds in a span of 3 weeks. I'll save the shoes for Part II.

You'll notice from the photos above how my jawline disappeared as the year progressed? LOL. Photo on the extreme right was my most recent picture (during my students' graduation), after I got my jawline back.

Most sulit haircut at Going Straight MCS

I had been itching to get a haircut for some time now, but couldn't quite find a space for it in my calendar. And even when I eventually found a schedule for it last Friday, a few errands sandwiched it. So I posted on my Facebook profile, asking for recommendations in the Makati CBD area.

I'm a little bit iffy about trusting my hair with most salons. I have biases against salon staff who cannot tell if my hair is natural. (If you're stupid enough not to be able to tell from the roots, then I shouldn't be giving you my business.)  And the ones who can actually tell are usually quick to suggest that I straighten it. (Oooh, I just love subjecting my hair to various synthetic chemicals. NOT.)

Anyway, before all that, my problem with my hair growing long is that it actually does not grow vertically. It grows horizontally. So I usually tie half of it up. You can see from the photo below how dry it has become.

Here's another problem: hair like mine doesn't go limp. It gets mop-like. Hence the need for a haircut.

Losing weight when injured.

It has almost become "tradition" for me to injure my stomach during the December holidays (I cannot digest certain things but I eat them during the holidays anyway) that there had been a couple of times I spent Christmas in the ER. What usually follows is that I lose about 10-15 pounds. And then I regain that again on the last quarter of the year.

This year, armed with Yakult and Maalox, I managed to avoid the hospital. But then the weight gain triggered two more injuries: plantar fasciitis (a foot problem) and the added pressure on my previous knee injury (2012). So seriously, I have no choice but to lose weight lest I end up permanently unable to walk. Suddenly, it was no longer an issue of whether I had the money to buy an entirely new wardrobe. The fear ceased to be a first world problem.

The solutions:
1. Choose carbs wisely.

BRTC Velvet Masks

Part of the package The Beauty and Cosmetics Shop sent me for review were a couple of beauty masks...which I actually did not know how to use. xD The instructions at the back of these masks were in Korean so I had to do a quick search for instructions.

Luckily, you can find some instructions at Sasa.

The first one I tried was the Vitamin A Velvet Mask.

FaBurrito: Fresh Mexican Grill

I noticed that ever since I gained more than the weight I was planning to gain (from 109lbs, I'm now 120lbs, but I am actually well-balanced at 112-115lbs), I noticed I've been craving for burritos lately. On an almost daily basis. I also noticed that I have difficulty finishing off one regular burrito even though I used to eat large ones when I was younger.

FaBurrito's fish burrito
This was why I was so happy to discover FaBurrito, which sits right at the ground floor of Ayala Columns (right in front of RCBC Building). It's walking distance from where I live so getting there and going home gives me a bit of an exercise.

BRTC Blemish Recover Balm

I actually did a mini-review of BRTC Blemish Recover Balm back in 2010 because it happens to be my favorite BRTC product. I remember in 2009 (when I first used it), I'd still be afflicted with the occasional breakout (around twice a month) and this was what I'd use. The description in the photo says: "Blemish Care System. Sebum Controlling & Soothing Recover Balm for Oily and Irritated Skin while Evening Out Skin Texture."

Chicken and ginger soup recipe for the sick

This morning, I woke up with a very bad case of sore throat -- as if a cheese grater had run repeatedly through it -- and allergic rhinitis. I wanted to make something soothing. I hit the internet by checking out the best ways to relieve the kind of pain I was in and a few suggestions about chicken soup came up. This recipe is pretty simple. It had to be simple because my hands were shaking with hunger when I was making this.

 What you need:

BRTC Jasmine Water BB Cream

Next up on my list of BRTC BB creams is the Jasmine Water BB Cream. So far the only other Jasmine BB cream I've tried is Pure Beauty and that was actually one of my favorites. I wanted to see if my favorite brand could match it.

Well this sample that was sent to me by The Beauty and Cosmetic Shop is pretty small but is enough for my entire face and neck. This is supposedly for dry sensitive skin. I have combination-oily but I didn't find out that it's for dry skin until days later. The description here says: "This is a triple function BB cream with whitening, wrinkle care and replenishment functions." (Hm. Did you mean "moisture"?)

BRTC Whitening and Repairing BB Cream

Holla, girls! Looks like I'm going to be doing at least one BB cream review per week until I finish the stash that was sent to me by The Beauty and Cosmetic Shop. I've already previously reviewed two of their products, Gold Caviar and Blemish Recover Balm, though I think I'll re-review them in-depth at the end of this series because it's been half a decade since I last used them. Anyway, let's start with what the ones I've just recently tried.

BRTC Whitening and Repairing BB Cream. It says here that it's a "Multifunctional Cream with Whitening, Anti-Wrinkle Effect Creating Natural Looking". LOL. That reads like an anti-climactic sentence with bad capitalization.

Anyway, it has SPF37 / PA++, which I think is good enough for what I call a "tinted sunblock". So let's see what it offers...Um. I'm actually afraid to let you go through the "Read more" parts because of the obligatory selfies, but meh.

Homemade Cold Busters

For some reason, me and a few of my friends picked up this strange sore throat/colds/fever combo in the last week. Must be the weather. In any case, here are a few preventive and curative measures you can prepare at home.

If you're experiencing the onset of colds (I woke up with a really itchy throat and the next day, I began to experience postnasal drip), you can combine 1 teaspoon honey and 1/4th teaspoon cinnamon and take it.

For best results, use organic raw honey. And this is not recommended for children below the age of 2.

For prevention, I took a cue from my friend Imee Ramos Garcia.

She posted about this "vitamin water" on Facebook and I tried it immediately (even though it's more like a cure than prevention in my case). My concoction is a little different from hers, though.

I sliced strawberries, lemon, lime and cucumber and dropped them into two pitchers of water. I then added mint and coco sugar. Just a bit. I still wanted my water to taste like water and just with a little hint of flavor.

Let these fruits set for 2 hours before drinking. Consume within 24 hours. She was absolutely right about it being refreshing and not overpowering like some powdered orange juice.

The drink is cold but I'm actually feeling a bit of improvement. I don't have the sniffles anymore.

But gosh this weather! Like my cousin (make-up artist Rae) said, it's like a Katy Perry song: cannot decide if it's gonna be hot or cold.

Grad Pic Shoot with Benny Reginaldo and M2 Studio

One of my biggest gripes about information flow in my alma mater, the University of the Philippines Diliman, is how...well, sometimes, it doesn't flow. Like in this instance, my classmates and I were left out of the yearbook. I don't even know who's responsible for the yearbook even though I asked, left my number, and no one called.

This graduation photo was important to me because of three things:

  1. This PhD (which I actually obtained last year) is my very last degree. I would like to have a memento of it.
  2. My first time to wear the Sablay as a graduate. I got my first degree from the University of the Philippines Manila, and thanks to a Philippine Daily Inquirer article, I found out that the reason we wore toga was because: "Except for those in medical courses, graduates in UP Manila also wear Sablay".
  3. My grandmother collects grad pics of her grandchildren. I would like to proudly give her an evidence of the final fruits of my student life's labor. I doubt she'll appreciate my transcript of records. LOL.
So there.

I decided to contact my friend Mike Mariano of M2 Studio. He had just come home from studying photography in New York and had built his studio very near where I live. After that was set, I contacted one of my students, Benny Reginaldo, for make-up because I was on a budget and he's actually pretty good at aesthetics, being a graduate of Multimedia Arts at the Asia Pacific College. I've seen his works on Facebook and I liked what I saw.

Errr...yeah, we forgot to take a "BEFORE" photo, so I'll just post a snapshot of myself that was taken the day before (at Harbor Square with one of my favorite friends Elvert Dela Cruz Bañares):

This serves as a perfect "BEFORE" photo because we were both hungreh and the smiles were forced. Hehe.

Here are shots taken behind the scene. Benny also happened to be a former student of Mike's, so he was also able to assist in the shoot. Oh and...yay for bigger curls. Hehe.

Off course, we need a group photo because everyone did a spectacular job. Aaaand I wanted something sorta less stiff.

And the final edited output. You can actually request how much editing should be done. Mike is not going to go all out and make you look totally different. Well, I wanted to look like the stiff people traditionally found on grad pics. Still, the editing was minimal.

Notice that my Sablay is on the left. I think placing the Sablay on the right is only for college graduates. I will be marching this weekend (UP's graduation rites only happen once a year, so those of us who graduated earlier in the school year will only get to march almost a year later). I think they're supposed to pin something on master's and doctoral graduates. Looking forward to that.

Shiseido Make-Up Workshop at the Powerplant

During the weekend, I was able to attend the Shiseido Make-Up workshop courtesy of Rowena (of Animetric's World). I have to admit that apart from the eyebrows and occasional eyeliner, I haven't been much of a make-up user for the past year. It's mostly because despite the number of workshops I have attended, I remain an idiot at applying make-up.

Anyway, I arrived late. Meep! But I was thankful for the tips I learned. More on that later.

It's a good thing that they didn't start immediately so I was just in time for the actual demo.

I do not doubt the expertise of Shiseido's staff when it comes to selecting the right make-up because of my experience with them while I was looking for a gift. I dropped by one of their stores one time and I described the person I was buying foundation for. She was mestiza. But they didn't immediately recommend a shade. They asked me what kind of mestiza and I told them that she was half Italian and olive-skinned. This is actually pretty tricky because people usually assume that all Caucasian mestizas are pinkish. The person who received my present was pleasantly surprised that I was able to pick the right shade. I'd have to thank Shiseido for that.

My favorite part. Eye make-up has always been problematic for me (super oily lids!!!), which was why I gave up on it. I asked for tips at the end of the session.

While we were all listening, we were given some treats to munch on.

Some chocolate chip cookies. There was also a batch of choclate covered biscuits but those did not last.

This tasted a lot like peach. I wasn't quite sure if it's peach tea or peach juice.

Here, Ro shows readers her favorite Shiseido lipstick.

After the demo and question-and-answer portion, we were asked to try out the different selections of cosmetics and skin care products.

Honestly, my mom, sister and I are Shiseido users. Well...that was before I went on hiatus (stopped working for 3 months) and started living like a hermit (therefore, broke). Now, I just enjoy my mom's stash whenever I visit my parents. Because my mom has freckles, she uses the White Lucent line. They're pretty effective in keeping them off.

Anyway for the things I learned in this workshop:

  1. I never really use water when using make-up but Shiseido says it's a huge no-no. You're actually inviting bacteria to thrive on your brushes and make-up.
  2. One of the guests asked what she could do if she bought the wrong shade of foundation (problems with acidity turning your face orange after a couple of hours). The solution was to use a primer to put a distance between the foundation and the acidity of your skin.
  3. I asked about oily eye lids. They said that primer is still the solution for it, but also to use only a small amount of eye shadow, especially for branded cosmetics like Shiseido and Shu Uemura. These are heavily pigmented.
Anyway, it's not that I can practice anytime soon but these are valuable tips I could definitely use, especially during business and formal occasions. Thanks for the experience, Ro! =^.^=

Woman on a Budget: 5 Things You Can Do Yourself

One of the habits I developed when I was doing the "P100/Day Diet" was looking for other means to save. An adult woman actually has to spend on many services just to keep herself groomed and clean-looking. Unless, of course, the girl is born with nice nails (ones that don't crack and trap dirt too often), nice hair (straight and silky) and nice skin (soft, smooth and hairless). Unfortunately, I was born with brittle nails, rebellious curly hair, and hairy legs.

For men, it's so easy. Just get a haircut, some decent dark pants, and some decent dark shoes. For women, it's not. A simple concept such as cutting nails isn't really that simple for many women. And I'm not even interested in nail polish!

Anyway, before I started cutting down my expenses, I'd spend thousands of pesos monthly on salon services such as waxing, pedicure (no polish), and facials (for cleaning up icky whiteheads and acne). Plus it frustrates me to no end that women's garments and shoes are made with planned obsolescence in mind, so they're not very durable and many of them are uncomfortable. Because maintenance was so expensive, these were the first things I reviewed on my budget list.

And then here's what I did:

1. Repair clothes instead of buying new ones.

I bought myself a sewing kit from Saizen and National Bookstore, where everything is cheap. I love the variety of thread colors Saizen offers. I've already used these on many of my clothes, particularly the ones with weird coloring.

2. Give yourself a facial.

I have had this Neutrogena Wave for about two years now. I rarely used it before, when I temporarily lived with my parents and I'd ride with my mom to work. I started using it twice a month when I started walking to work and then once a week when I changed jobs and started taking jeep rides. I swear it helps me get rid of those icky white heads and other bumps that form on my face. I always love the feel of my skin when I wake up in the morning after using this at night.

The cleansing pads are worth about P400 (I bought the pads on sale, buy-one-take-one) and there are 30 of them. If you use them once or twice a week, that's about P13-P26 on a monthly facial already. How much do you spend on a salon facial? Yup, that's huge savings right there.

3. Do your own pedicure.

This took a bit of practice, especially when cleaning the sides of my largest toe. Most of the stuff you will initially spend on are tools. You can get a complete set for less than P500 or if you're really on a tight budget, just buy one item at a time. You'll need a nail cutter, nipper and pusher first. The brush is optional. I used soiled clothes for removing debris before I bought the brush.

The rest, like cuticle remover and the cuticle oil that gives your nails a pinkish glow, won't even amount to P50. I have been doing this for months and I have yet to replace the cuticle remover and the cuticle oil.

Can you imagine how many times I'd visit a salon to have my toe nails cleaned in a month? I'd spend about P200-P400 per visit, so that's about P400-800 a month. And that doesn't even justify the stress of having someone forcefully remove an imaginary ingrown. Gad, I remember that girl telling me that she had to remove it because it would hurt. It only started hurting when she tampered with it!!!! GRRR.

4. Wax yourself.

I tried sugaring back in my early 20s and it took too much of my time that I decided to just let salon people do it for me. I would spend about P500 a month on waxing. It's also not a very relaxing experience unless the attendant is good at what she does.

When I got into the P100/Day challenge, I sought out cheaper options. I tried Epilin, which my sister swears by, saying it is the easiest for her to use. Hah! I'm so stupid at anything beauty-related that I couldn't even follow the instructions. Plus I thought I burned and tore off my legs when I removed the wax. That was one excruciating experience I dare not repeat.

When I saw these Veet wax strips at PCX in Greenbelt (around P200+) I bought them immediately.

There are about 6 pairs of wax strips, giving you a total of 12 strips you can use. I can't believe how economical this is. I've only been able to use 3 pairs on both my legs. If it takes about 2-3 weeks for my hair to grow back, that's still P400-P500 worth of monthly savings.

I was also surprised at how quick and almost pain-free it felt, which is in stark contrast with my Epilin experience.

5. Coffee or sugar for foot scrub.

One of my favorite salon services is the foot spa/scrub: my feet always end up looking near my age after we're done (I have the teeth, feet and hands of a 50-year-old and that's nowhere near my age). At salons, I'd usually spend about P500-600 for this because I have really tough calluses, thanks to impractical female footwear. (Related rant: Flats make me trip, high heels kill my knees...but it seems those are the only two options we have in shoe shops. Unfortunately, rubber shoes are not considered corporate attire.)

I have resorted to buying foot cushions (inexpensive but still...damn you shoemakers) and then using sugar or used ground coffee for scrubbing the scaly parts of my feet. I get the same result I'd get if I went to a salon. And it's still cheap, if you consider that you brewed coffee for drinking and then you get to recycle the used coffee beans.

Is there a service I can't let go of?

That would be a good massage at Mont Albo, which is directly located across my condo. Though I have this 3M's Nexcare First Aid compress that my room mate Aileen swears is effective for her stiff neck, I still like the old-fashioned hilot method. There's something about exerting pressure on my stiff muscles (and the warm stuff they put on my back) that relaxes me.

If I want to feel a deeper level of relaxation, and if I have the budget, I'd go for Wensha Spa (I find other spas too expensive). For almost P700, you can already avail of an eat-all-you-can buffet + body massage package.

Skin care on Poorita Mirasol's budget

Haha. Been meaning to do a blog post on something still related to my P100-A-Day Challenge and I thought about skin care. A few women asked me how I'm surviving in the skin care / grooming part when I was on a poverty diet, so here it is.

I'm no longer on the P100/day challenge because I've been eating more often now (so it's now up to about P150-P200/day) but my standard of living has changed so drastically that I thought I should share it with other women who are also on a budget. In addition, I happened to unearth some old photos (old, like 11 years ago) of myself and realized that I must be doing something right today because I seem to look older THEN. I'm posting the comparison photos at the very end.

Anyway...on to my blog entry.

Well first of all, I am lazy with lotions. I wish I could muster the diligence it takes to apply body lotion every day but I only remember to do this perhaps once a month or once a week. So I heavily rely on a good moisturizing bath soap like Dove:

I usually buy those "Save P15" packs of three. I forgot how much these cost but I doubt each bar would go over P40. It just became a habit to get these off the grocery shelves.

Next: Moisturizers. Sometimes I use Human Nature balancing toner at night before I moisturize. I don't do this during the day. I just go ahead and moisturize with:

Uh, yeah...hope this wasn't shocking but Prosource Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is now my night moisturizer while Human Nature's Sunflower Beauty Oil serves as my morning moisturizer. Both are a little over P200. The VCO can be bought at Mercury Drug while the sunflower oil can be bought online. I use them both for taming my wild hair, too.

Incidentally, I also use VCO for my legs and it made my skin really soft. They would usually feel bristly after shaving but I don't have that problem anymore since this became a habit. For my face, I might opt for something stronger when I finally have the budget again. In the meantime, it seems to do the job well so far. (Note: some women might experience clogging because VCO is very thick. That's why I use it at night.)

Next: No matter how poor I get, I will never go out of the house without sunblock.

This is my brand. I discovered it when make-up artist Nayna Katigbak did my hair and make-up during my brother's wedding and she told me that this was the perfect make-up base. This costs about P388. I've tried other, more expensive sunblocks before (will write a review/comparison someday), but I'm loving this the most.

I am happy enough with just this and I usually don't need foundation anymore. I've come to terms with my moles and dark spots. During my teaching days, however, it's a totally different matter and I'd like a more mature, polished look. On those days, I would opt to wear foundation:

This is Human Nature's Perfect Coverage Mineral Foundation in Caramel. It's supposed to be medium coverage but I like that it's lightweight, much similar to putting on face powder.

Of course, when you put on make-up, there will be times when your face gets a bit oily. I don't add more make-up to stop the oil. That would just make me feel yucky. Instead, I use this:

Mary Kay oil mattifier. I just dab some of this on the oily areas of my face and I'm good to go. It costs approximately P600 but it goes a long long long long looooooooong way. It's been almost a year and a half since I first bought this for my brother's wedding and I still haven't finished it off. If I compute for the number of months this has been useful to me, I'd say it costs about P40/month.

And here is the most important(!!!):

3.5-4 liters of water daily. I was never a fan of water, until my doctor (internal medicine) forced me to make peace with it. Apparently, there's also a science to this. For you to be able to absorb all that, you should drink it deliberately. If you chug all of it in one go, you will just end up peeing most of it.

By the way, I note my liquid intake like this:

Some older people, who saw me doing this at parties, were shocked. But you see, if I don't do this, I would completely forget to drink water. Water is cheap. My condo purified water is P40/5 gallons and no office should exist without a water station. Drinking it is a small price to pay for avoiding hospital visits driven by dehydration, digestion problems and possibly UTI.

The biggest plus for all you kikays out there? Well, when I went home to my parents' place some time ago, my sister exclaimed that my skin looked better now than it did 5-10 years back. And heck, 5 years ago, I used to spend most of my salary on expensive department store moisturizers and make-up. Sheesh. If I had known water would have this effect on my skin, I'd have saved hundreds and thousands of pesos. I am not kidding.

Let me give you a comparison: I managed to dig up a few photos while I was cleaning my laptop and I found some old ones from 11 years ago. Check it out:

The photos on the top row were of me in heavy make-up. I had to cover my bad skin with a lot of make-up back then.

The recent photos on the bottom row were of me without foundation. The bottom left one was almost completely devoid of make-up, while the bottom right one only had me putting on some eyeliner and mascara.

I was actually quite surprised when I unearthed these photos and realized that I look much younger now than I did 10 years ago. Water gave me something that no expensive moisturizer could give.

That's about it. Whew! That was a long post. Hope I did not bore you. Thanks for reading! =^.^=

Project Vanity Celebrates 5th Year

I wasn't supposed to go to any event during my long birthday weekend of March 8-10. I was supposed to spend that weekend at my parents' place and you know, catch up with my family. I did not anticipate that most of my family would be busy and I got really bored.

Told my sister (Reluctant Stylista blogger Alex): "Please take me anywhere because if you don't, I'd either go back home to Makati and totally miss the scheduled family meeting or I will pick fights (a.k.a. troll) in comments sections of some political websites again." I was that bored.

Anyway, she contacted Liz Lanuzo (pictured below), who also happened to be my editor when I was still writing for the Philippine Online Chronicles, and it turns out that I could go to her Project Vanity's 5th year anniversary celebration. I had actually wanted to go when I first read about it on Liz's blog, but didn't think I could make it.

The day was full of pleasant surprises. First, I ran into Michelle Lim of My Mom Friday, whom I haven't seen in ages! It was her birthday, too! =)

Anyhoo...going back to the topic, Project Vanity's 5th year celebration was held at the Beauty Bar in Bonifacio Global City...and I was stupid enough to forget that it was a beauty event: everyone had make-up on. I only had my eyebrows and tinted lip balm.

Yeah. Compared to everyone in there, my face looked so bare. But I looooved my outfit, which technically isn't mine because I borrowed it from my sis. I lacked accessories, though. I always forget them.

Another pleasant surprise: There's Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf at the top floor of Muji, where Beauty Bar is also located. Now I know where to go whenever Starbucks at Fully Booked is packed. That's my sister figuring out what drink to get.

Third wonderful surprise: Den Alibudbud, my cousin (make-up artist) Rae's high school best friend, turns out to be Liz's assistant.

Because it was such a warm day, my sis and I decided to get some fresh air at the balcony, along with the other guests. I love it! I really should hang out here more often.

Later, I found Liz prepping Den's face for her make-up demo, which is the highlight of the party.

While everyone else was busy, I got curious about this brand that many of my blogger friends have been raving about: Fairy Drops. Since my face was so bare (wasn't even wearing foundation!), I decided to at least put on some mascara and a bit of concealer. That purple tube of Fairy Drops mascara over there? Whoa! I certainly didn't need anything else.

And then I decided to play with the K-Palette eyeliner. This was fun!

Event introduction by Karrots. Lots of reminders about grooming your eyebrows. Hehe.

The highlight of the event began once Liz was done prepping Den. I noticed that most of the women here look confident, even in their casual getup.

Everyone was all eyes and ears as the demo ensued. Honestly, as I was listening to all of the beauty tips and as I observed all the enthralled guests, I realized that proper grooming -- such as making sure that your eyebrows are neat and arched properly -- can actually be very empowering. Looking good builds confidence.

Token sibling photo. Most people who see my sister's blog posts think she looks like me. But when we're side by side, we really don't look alike.

Well, Michelle, upon introduction, said we looked alike, but here I barely see the resemblance...except maybe for the curly hair... I think the huge difference is that I smile a lot while Alex is always sophisticated and fierce.

Aaaand up close: seeing the effects of the Fairy Drops concealer, mascara and K-Palette liner. I feel like they lit up my eyes somewhat.

Hahaha! Without foundation, I can see all my moles.

And pores. -_-;

Anyway, this has been an enlightening event. Learned a lot about certain areas of Bonifacio Global City and some make-up brands I could check out.

I had been wanting to replenish my depleted make-up stash ever since I went back to teaching. When I was working for Anino Games, I didn't see the need for make-up but as a university professor, who wanted to make a distinction between me and my students, I realized I need to polish my look. So yeah...I'll probably be dropping by this area again soon.
